Teaching Three: Generosity

Proverbs 11.24,25
Some give freely, yet grow all the richer;
others withhold what is due, and only suffer want.
A generous person will be enriched,
and one who gives water will get water.

1 Timothy 6.17-19
As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

Luke 6.37,38
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”

Question for Everyone:  On a scale of 1-10, (1 = Scrooge and 10 = St. Nicholas) how would your rate your generosity?

Introduction

The Offering and the Lord’s Table
The God revealed in Jesus is a generous God and we are therefore to become a generous people.

Grace in the Flesh
Rembrandt’s Prodigal Son
Generosity is grace in the flesh.

Generosity is Not Just a Money Thing
The generosity of presence.
There is a difference between having a full life and having a busy spirit.

Make All You Can, Save All You Can . . . .
John Wesley is our theological grandfather.

The Tithe
For some of you the thought of giving away 10-15% of your income away is incomprehensible.
I have no idea what anyone gives to this church.
A generous spirit provides opportunities for God to bless us.

The Financial Status of Mosaic
My greatest concern is expanding our missional presence in this neighborhood.

My Family and Tithing
We don’t give to get.  We give in response.

Conclusion
“Thank you God for providing for my needs.”

My prayer is that through the spiritual discipline of generosity you would receive in full measure all the blessings of God’s grace. Amen.
